The Transatlantic Superhighway

I never really thought about it, but I'm sure the flight patterns over the Atlantic are actually this tightly controlled. Now the news that President Bush made some of the military flight paths available over the holidays makes more sense. The Transatlantic Superhighway is one of the diagrams on John Grimwade's Information Graphics site.

  1. Notice that pretty much all the routes pass over Canada. Likewise, flights from the eastern US to Alaska also pass over Canada.

The US government is considering a rule that all Canadian aircraft passing over the US (without stopping, say from Canada to Mexico) must have passenger lists cleared by the US up to 72 hours in advance.

Fair enough, but the Canadian government would have no choice but to enact a similar rule. The fun begins when some senator can't board a flight to Europe or Alaska because he hasn't given the Canadian government sufficient advance notice.
